How to use the clock out time calculator
- Enter your clock-in time, or press Now as you punch in.
- Enter the hours you need to work, such as 8, 7.5 or 7:30.
- Enter your unpaid lunch or break in minutes. Leave it at 0 if your breaks are paid.

Want to leave at a set time instead? Choose When should I clock in? and the calculator works backwards.
How to calculate your clock-out time
Clock-out time = clock-in time + hours of work + unpaid break. The unpaid break is added because you are on site for it but not paid for it.
- Clock in 8:12 AM, 8 hours of work, 30-minute lunch → 8 h 30 min on site → clock out 4:42 PM.
- Clock in 7:45 AM, 7.5 hours of work, 45-minute lunch → 8 h 15 min on site → clock out 4:00 PM.
- Night shift: clock in 10:00 PM, 8 hours, 30-minute break → clock out 6:30 AM the next day.
Short paid breaks, such as two 15-minute rest breaks, don't change your clock-out time, because they count as hours worked. Only add breaks you are not paid for.
8-hour shift: what time do you clock out?
Clock-out times for an 8-hour shift, depending on when you start and how long your unpaid lunch is:
| Clock in | No unpaid lunch | 30-min lunch | 1-hour lunch |
|---|---|---|---|
| 6:00 AM | 2:00 PM | 2:30 PM | 3:00 PM |
| 7:00 AM | 3:00 PM | 3:30 PM | 4:00 PM |
| 7:30 AM | 3:30 PM | 4:00 PM | 4:30 PM |
| 8:00 AM | 4:00 PM | 4:30 PM | 5:00 PM |
| 8:30 AM | 4:30 PM | 5:00 PM | 5:30 PM |
| 9:00 AM | 5:00 PM | 5:30 PM | 6:00 PM |
Finishing at exactly 40 hours on Friday
Many hourly workers need to stop at 40 hours to avoid unapproved overtime. Tick Reach a weekly total, enter the hours already on your time card, and the calculator works out how long to work today.
Example: Monday to Thursday you worked 32 hours 15 minutes. To reach 40 hours you need 7:45 more. Clock in at 8:00 AM with a 30-minute lunch and clock out at 4:15 PM. If your planned day would take you past 40 hours, the calculator shows the time you cross into overtime. To add up the week's hours first, use the time card calculator.
Working backwards: when to clock in
Need to leave by a certain time, for an appointment or school pickup? Choose When should I clock in?, enter the time you want to leave and your hours. Clock-in time = leave time − hours of work − unpaid break. To leave at 5:00 PM after 8 hours with a 30-minute lunch, clock in at 8:30 AM.

Frequently asked questions
How do I calculate what time to clock out?
Add the hours you need to work and any unpaid break to your clock-in time. Clock-out time = clock-in time + hours of work + unpaid break. For example, clocking in at 8:12 AM for 8 hours with a 30-minute lunch means clocking out at 4:42 PM.
If I clock in at 7:30 AM, when do I clock out for an 8-hour shift?
At 4:00 PM if you take an unpaid 30-minute lunch, or 3:30 PM with no unpaid break. With a 1-hour lunch it's 4:30 PM.
Does my lunch break count toward my hours?
Usually not. A bona fide meal break of 30 minutes or more where you are fully relieved of duty is normally unpaid, so it is added on top of your working hours. Short rest breaks of about 5 to 20 minutes are paid under federal rules, so do not add them to the break field.
What is a clock-out time?
It is the time you punch out or sign off at the end of your shift. Your paid hours for the day run from clock-in to clock-out, minus any unpaid breaks.
How do I work out when to clock in so I can leave on time?
Choose "When should I clock in?" and enter the time you want to leave. The calculator subtracts your hours and break. To leave at 5:00 PM after 8 hours with a 30-minute lunch, clock in at 8:30 AM.
How do I finish at exactly 40 hours for the week?
Tick "Reach a weekly total" and enter the hours on your time card so far. With 32:15 already worked, you need 7:45 more, so clocking in at 8:00 AM with a 30-minute lunch means clocking out at 4:15 PM.
What if my shift goes past midnight?
The calculator rolls over to the next day. Clocking in at 10:00 PM for 8 hours with a 30-minute break means clocking out at 6:30 AM the next morning.
Can I type hours like 7.5 or 7:30?
Yes. 7.5, 7:30 and 7h 30m all mean 7 hours 30 minutes. Plain numbers are read as hours.
